BLACK GILL DISEASE

Definition

Disease expressing itself by dark to black appearances of gills in cultured shrimps (penaeids) and can be caused by several disease agents as well as by poor water quality (e.g. high ammonia, nitrate, chlorine and other chemicals typically employed in shrimp pond management). Such disease causes must be clearly distinguished from those "black gills" caused by the accumulation of organic matter (e.g., highly turbid pond water), a condition also frequently encountered in poorly-managed highly-intensive shrimp farms.
