BEGGATIATOA SPP.

Definition

Bacteria genus, some members of which belong to the gram-negative class of Eubacteria and some to the Cyanophyta (bluegreens). Pigment-free Beggiatoa mats are often found as covering layers of anoxic, H2S-containing organic sediments where they can move about slowly. They can also occur in open seawater at the boundary between H2S and oxygen-rich layers. They oxidize sulphide to sulphate whereby sulphur will temporarily be stored as an energy source in the cells. Beggiatoa occurs in organically highly polluted waters where they tend to show mass development when the carrying capacity of the sediment is exceeded. Sometimes colloquially referred to as sewage fungus.
