BONAMIA OSTREA

Definition

Protozoan pathogen of the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) affecting oysters and causing the disease bonamiasis. The disease is characterized by yellow discolouration of the oyster. Bonamia was first observed in Europe in Brittany in 1979, and has since spread to Holland and Ireland, decimating the native oyster stocks. This had led to a concomitant increase in the culturing of the introduced species Crassostrea gigas , the Pacific oyster, which is not susceptible to Bonamia. The pathogen affects older oysters in the main and can therefore be controlled by appropriate management strategies.
