Class of aquatic molluscs characterized by two calcareous valves joined by a flexible ligament along a hinge line. This class includes various edible species, many of which are cultivated (e.g. mussels, oysters, scallops, clams). Commonly known as bivalves. Syn. Lamellibranchia; Pelecypoda.
