ADJUVANT

Definition

(1) Any substance which is added to a drug or other chemical (for instance, a disinfectant) to enhance its activity. (2) In immunology: any substance which, when administered with or before an antigen, heightens and/or affects qualitatively the immune response in terms of antibody formation and/or the cell-mediated response. Adjuvants include BCG, aluminium hydroxide, and water-in-oil emulsions (e.g. Freund's adjuvant).
