ADIPOSE FIN

Definition

A small fleshy appendage located posterior to the main dorsal fin; it is often described as a rayless dorsal fin and is present in the Salmonidae and Ictaluridae, lizardfishes and pirate perches. In catfishes, they are either keel-like (adnate) or flaglike (adnexed); the others have adnexed adipose fins. This fin is frequently clipped to mark hatchery -produced and released salmonids.
