AUTOLYSIS

Definition

Auto-digestion; self-dissolution; the spontaneous disintegration of tissues or cells by the action of their own autogenous enzymes, such as occurs after death and in some pathological conditions. After death, lysosome membranes become more permeable and protease enzymes will penetrate into cell plasma thereby causing auto-digestion. Fixation stops the action of these enzymes.
